Gardone is known mainly for the Vittoriale, but also for its variety of prestigious residences of twentieth century, in different styles: neo-classical, Art Nouveau, neo-Gothic, even Moorish.
The development of Gardone is realized mainly in the twentieth century, thanks to the love for the lake and the imagination of its citizens and business to the wonderful atmosphere that characterizes this zone: a further proof of the mild climate of Gardone, besides, also offers the botanical garden that the naturalist Arturo Hruska realized in the early twentieth century on the lake is one of the most interesting and exotic in Europe, where more than 2,000 live plants. But the most famous monument of Gardone is, as already mentioned, the Vittoriale degli Italiani, a complex where there are buildings, paths and fountains, intended by the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio as a self-celebration of his genius. Among the buildings, the poet's house, which contains more than 30,000 books and where the poet died in 1938, the War Museum, the Mausoleum which houses the body of D'Annunzio. In the garden, we find the ship 'Puglia' gift to the poet by the Italian Navy, an auditorium, which houses the airplane with which the writer worked his famous flight over Vienna, the outdoor theater.
